How Does Your Garden Grow?

I have a black thumb. I am horrible at growing any kind of plant. We always had a garden when I was young, so I understand the basic concepts and the amount of work it takes. I blame my lack of skills on the fact that we live in a desert and the heat and the bad soil and lack of water. The kiddos think food just comes from the grocery store.

Thank goodness we get to come up and visit Uncle Kirk and Aunt Niece because Kirk always has an amazing garden.

Of course this year it is a little behind schedule because of the weather…Imagine that?!? Gardens not growing because it still feels like winter.

He has pumpkins

and onions

and tomatoes

and corn. Which is a little behind the corn growing where we live.

He has a bunch of other things growing out there too.

We gave the kidlets a little lesson on where our food comes from and had them help weed the garden. Which at this point is a never ending task with all the rain.

They did a great job at only picking the weeds and not the plants. Uncle Kirk did decide that he would do the carrots by himself since Big J was having a hard time telling the little carrot plants from the weeds.

They even have some of this:

Do you know what it is?

I have always been very impressed with the amount of work that goes into their garden. Then when the vegetables are ready to harvest all the time they spend canning.

But I will keep depending on the grocery store.

  5. Farmers market! I do have a couple of tomatoe plants and a pepper plant. City living doesn't leave very good soil for a garden.
